Digital Modes

Digital Modes Workshop

Digital Modes Presentation at Queen Creek on 5/9/2019: PDF / PPTX

On 11/3/2018 we'll be having a digital modes interactive workshop playing with the software and devices and doing example transmissions and activities. Presentation is below:

AA7ON Digital Modes Workshop 20181103

I presented the following powerpoint about Digital Modes to a group of about 38 fellow HAMs on 9/22/2018. The intent was to provide a survey of what it means to operate digitally excluding digital voice modes, bur rather digital for sending text and images. We're looking to create a digital net locally in the Phoenix Metro area. You can download all of the materials from the following links:

Rather than host the software I have updated links to all of the software presented previously:

http://orcadigitalnet.com/ - I've really enjoyed participating in the Orca Digital Net on tuesday evenings, I highly recommend monitoring the net for those wanting to understand how to use the FLDIGI suite of NBEMS Emcomm software modules (FLMSG, FLAMP, and FLDIGI). They recommend checking in & out the first few weeks before trying to participate in the full net.

East Valley Digital Net

We're starting a local VHF digital net in the east valley and surrounding area that can hit our digital frequency on simplex, 145.550 simplex for NBEMS practice using FLDIGI and FLMSG and 145.500 Simplex for SSTV transmissions (as per SSTV 2m Bandplan). Due to the nature of our complicated lives we have not determined a specific night for a digital simplex net, so for now I will be monitoring for 15 minutes after several voice nets and will transmit test messages three times over the 15 minute period as well as monitor for your transmissions.

Sundays at 8:45 PM (EARLY CHECKINS, 9 START)
145.550 FM Simplex, POSSIBLY 146.660 pl tone 162.2 for a repeater excercise. Always starting on simplex.

Netiquette: It is important during a digital only net to keep an eye out existing traffic on your waterfall especillay if you don't have your audio turned up. Please read a wonderful quick-start guide on the Orca Digital Net for a good background on digital net etiquette: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/

Pre-Tone: Monitor for traffic, if none heard send a "tune" tone for 5 seconds and then send transmission

Message Duration: Try to keep less than 1 minute, images may take 2-3

FLDIGI Settings:

  • RSID - Read Solomon ID should be turned on for the modes we are using, see the FLDIGI users manual here: http://www.w1hkj.com/FldigiHelp/id_configuration_page.html
  • TxID and RxID buttons: Turned on:
  • RxID button - toggles the detection of Reed Solomon Identification codes.
  • TxID button - toggles the transmission of the RSID signal.
  • VideoID: This is fun but not required, you can send your call sign using tones which will write the callsign into the waterfall of the receiving stations. A good tutorial of setting up a macro and your system for this is at: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/
  • 1500hz Offset - we will try to maintain this convention of transmitting at 1500hz, so in the waterfall you select 1500 with your mouse click than push the LK button

Here's a screenshot of how my FLDIGI Looks with all settings selected:

DX

LOTW UploadsI'm a big fan of DX because it combines a number of my passions in the world of mapping, electronics, and radio. When you build a 43 foot antenna out of a $25 piece of #10 gauge wire, hook it to a 25 year old radio connected to a $100 computer and can communicate with someone around the world independent of any other infrastructure I call that amazing. With the invention of spotting networks and web sites that register your radio contacts you get almost instant validation that your computer, radio, and antenna system are working and how well the radio propagation is working. It's still amazing to see my signal show up halfway around the world. Even more amazing is when I see a "WSRP" transmission sent out at less power than a mobile radio or my handheld reach out halfway around the world.
